A clearing agent for appliance distributors needs to know that Kenya regulates energy efficiency as well as safety. When the standard for air conditioners was tightened in 2019, 73% of the models then on the market became non-compliant. Distributors of refrigerators, air conditioners, televisions and kitchen appliances need models that are certified, registered and labelled before they ship, or the stock may not be lawfully saleable.

Energy Efficiency Is a Market-Access Rule
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority enforces minimum energy performance standards for refrigerators, air conditioners, motors and lighting. Models must be tested by an accredited laboratory, registered, and carry the approved energy label before shipping. The 2019 air conditioner revision shows how fast thresholds can tighten. See our appliances guide for the full process.
Check Registration Before You Choose the Model
A model that is registered today may not stay compliant after a standards review, and a supplier’s catalogue is not proof of Kenyan registration. Ask for the registration number and label, verify it, and confirm the exact model you’re buying matches the registered one. Substituted models are a common source of trouble, as our electrical equipment guide explains.
KEBS Conformity and EPR
Most appliances also need KEBS pre-export verification and a Certificate of Conformity, with the Import Standardization Mark on arrival. Electrical and electronic goods and batteries carry Extended Producer Responsibility obligations; see our EPR guide. Smart or connected appliances with wireless capability may also need Communications Authority type approval.
Counterfeits and Grey Imports
Branded appliances are counterfeited, and unauthorised imports undercut authorised dealers while exposing buyers to unsafe products. Keep distributor agreements and authorisation letters, and read our Anti-Counterfeit Authority guide. Authorised distribution also protects warranty and after-sales support, which customers increasingly expect.
Bulky, Fragile and Value-Dense Cargo
Appliances take up space and break easily. Decide between full container and LCL based on volume and model mix, specify packaging that survives handling, and make sure insurance covers breakage. Model-level itemisation matters for classification and for matching certificates.
