LCL shipping from China to Kenya lets you pay for the space your goods occupy instead of a whole container, which makes importing practical for businesses that don’t yet fill a container. It also adds steps, from consolidation in China to deconsolidation at Mombasa, and some scrutiny from customs. We offer both LCL and FCL, so here is how LCL really works and how to tell which one is cheaper for you.

How LCL Works
Your cargo is collected, or delivered by the supplier under FOB, to a consolidation warehouse in China, where it is received, measured, weighed and combined with other shippers’ cargo into one container for the voyage. At Mombasa the container is opened at a container freight station and each shipper’s cargo is separated for clearance and collection. You typically receive a House Bill of Lading from the consolidator, while the carrier issues a Master Bill of Lading for the whole container.
How LCL Is Priced
LCL is usually billed per cubic metre (CBM) or per tonne, whichever is greater, with additional origin and destination handling charges. That makes accurate measurements vital: if actual dimensions exceed what you declared, you can be re-billed. Ask suppliers for carton counts, dimensions and weights, and check them against the packing list before you pay.
Time: Allow for the Extra Steps
Because cargo must be consolidated before sailing and deconsolidated on arrival, LCL generally takes longer than FCL from the same origin, and it is tied to the consolidator’s cut-off dates, not your supplier’s readiness. If you buy from several factories, every supplier must deliver on time, or the shipment waits for the next consolidation. Build this into your launch dates.
When Does a Full Container Become Cheaper?
There is no single break-even point, because rates move with season and route, and rules of thumb quoted in the market, often around a dozen or more cubic metres, are only starting points. Compare an actual LCL quote with an actual FCL quote for your volume, including origin and destination charges, and remember FCL gives you more control over timing and less handling of your goods. Our FCL versus LCL guide covers the Kenya side of this decision.
Packing for LCL
Strong cartons, clear shipping marks matching your documents, and palletisation where appropriate protect goods through extra handling. Fragile items should be packed more robustly than you would for a direct container. If you use wooden crates or pallets, they must meet ISPM 15.
Documents and Kenyan Requirements
Every LCL shipment still needs a Certificate of Origin, an export declaration document, accurate invoices and packing lists, and valid local marine cargo insurance. Because the consolidated container is containerised sea cargo, it also needs an Advance Cargo Declaration reference before loading; ask us how that is handled for your consolidation.
What We Need to Quote an LCL Shipment
- What the product is
- Where your supplier is (city and province), since this decides the port or airport
- Cargo size: number of cartons, total cubic metres (CBM) and gross weight in kg. Minimum 1 CBM
- Packaging type (cartons, pallets, wooden crates) and whether goods are fragile or heavy
- The Incoterm on your supplier’s quotation (EXW or FOB) and the supplier’s contact
- Your target arrival date, and any permits or certificates your product needs
Importing smaller volumes from China? Request an LCL quote from Clearon Logistics, and we’ll compare LCL with a full container for your cargo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is LCL always slower than FCL? Generally yes, because cargo must be consolidated before sailing and deconsolidated on arrival, and it depends on consolidation cut-off dates.
How is LCL charged? Usually per cubic metre or tonne, whichever is greater, plus origin and destination handling charges.
When should I switch from LCL to FCL? When a real FCL quote for your volume is lower than an LCL quote including all charges, or when timing control matters more. Compare actual quotes.
