Air freight from China to Kenya is the right tool when speed, value or product launches justify the premium over sea freight. We ship by air through two gateways, Guangzhou Baiyun and Hong Kong, and which one is best depends on where your supplier is and how your cargo is packed. Here’s how to use air freight without letting volumetric weight and documentation errors eat the benefit.

When Air Freight Makes Sense
Choose air for urgent restocking, high-value or light products, samples and product launches, and shipments where a few weeks at sea would cost more in lost sales than the freight premium. For bulky, low-value goods or planned restocking, sea freight usually wins; our air versus sea guide compares them in detail.
Two Gateways: Guangzhou Baiyun and Hong Kong
Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) sits in the Pearl River Delta, close to the factories that make much of China’s electronics, lighting and household goods. Hong Kong (HKG) is one of the world’s busiest cargo airports, with a wide network of airlines and cargo routes. Cargo from nearby factories can reach either, but trucking goods across the border to Hong Kong involves additional formalities, so compare total time and cost against flying from Guangzhou. Tell us your supplier’s location and we’ll recommend the better route for your cargo.
Chargeable Weight: The Number That Sets Your Bill
Airlines charge on the greater of actual weight or volumetric weight, commonly calculated by dividing the cargo’s volume in cubic centimetres by 6,000. A one-cubic-metre carton of foam weighing 100 kg is therefore charged at roughly 167 kg. Light, bulky goods can cost far more by air than their weight suggests, so ask suppliers to pack tightly, remove excess packaging, and consider reducing volume before booking.
What Needs Extra Care by Air
Lithium batteries and power banks, liquids, aerosols, magnets and certain other goods are subject to dangerous-goods or special handling rules, and carriers can refuse them without correct declarations. Tell us what your product contains before you order, not when it’s ready to fly. Goods that need permits in Kenya, such as communications equipment or drones, must have them before the cargo arrives.
Documents and Kenyan Requirements
You need the Airway Bill, commercial invoice, packing list, a Certificate of Origin and the export declaration document. The Advance Cargo Declaration applies to containerised sea cargo and not to air freight, but Kenya’s local cargo insurance requirement applies to commercial imports, so confirm how it applies to your air shipment; see our marine insurance guide.
Clearance at JKIA
Air cargo has tight storage windows at the airport, so clearance needs to move quickly once the flight lands. Have your documents checked before departure and a clearing agent ready; see our guide to clearing at JKIA.
Keeping Air Freight Costs Under Control
Combine orders from several suppliers into one shipment, pack for density, and keep air for the goods that earn it. Compare against LCL for mid-sized, less urgent cargo. Our landed cost guide shows how to test whether the faster option still leaves margin.
What We Need to Quote an Air Shipment
- What the product is, and its HS code if you know it
- Where your supplier is (city and province), since this decides the port or airport
- Cargo size: number of cartons, total cubic metres (CBM) and gross weight in kg. Minimum 45KG
- Packaging type (cartons, pallets, wooden crates) and whether goods are fragile or heavy
- The Incoterm on your supplier’s quotation (EXW or FOB) and the supplier’s contact
- Your target arrival date, and any permits or certificates your product needs
Need cargo from China in days, not weeks? Request an air freight quote from Clearon Logistics with your supplier’s location and cargo details, and we’ll confirm gateway and routing options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which airports do you ship from in China? Guangzhou Baiyun and Hong Kong.
What is volumetric weight? It is a calculated weight based on a package’s dimensions, commonly volume in cubic centimetres divided by 6,000. Airlines charge the greater of actual and volumetric weight.
Can I send lithium batteries by air? They are subject to dangerous-goods rules and may be refused without correct declarations, so tell us before you order.
Does the Advance Cargo Declaration apply to air freight? No. It applies to containerised sea cargo, but other Kenyan requirements such as the Certificate of Origin and export declaration document still apply.
